Madeon - Pop Culture

July 17, 2011  •   Categories: Blogging, Case Study, Creative, Film/Movie, Music  •   531 Comments

17 year old french producer Madeon just posted a video of what he called "a little live idea" on twitter. Needless to say, i think we are all speechless. In the video, he skillfully chops 39 pop songs together to create something new. I'm most impressed by the rhythmic aspect of the mix; its so incredibly funky - while he still maintaing a real song structure, chord progression, and catchy melody. This isn't exactly a mashup, or a remix, so what would you call this?

A couple weeks ago i was fortunate enough to dj the Friendswithyou and AOL benefit opening section 2 of the highline. The Miami-based art collective FriendsWithYou — a partnership between Sam Borkson and Tury Sandoval that was founded in 2002 — got the second section of the High Line off to a good start with a celebration and installation of its colorful Rainbow City inflatable sculptures at the Lot, a vacant space below the northernmost end of the elevated park, last week. I played a a total curveball set everything from brazilian baile funk, disco, hiphop, to motown and the crowd was really into it. Here are some pictures from the event below. Interacting with FWY’s 40-piece environmental installation was simply amazing.

AOL’s Hal Trencher and AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, FriendsWithYou’s Sam Borkson, Paper Magazine‘s David Hershkovits, and FriendsWithYou’s Tury Sandoval at The Lot

Artist and musician David Byrne on the High Line, i fanned out quite a bit and probably weirded him out.

PS. i decided to walk down the highline a few days later and passed by The Standard Hotel to see KAWS' new installation. It reminded me a lot of the friendswithyou balloons in the sheer size of the piece.

New Music: Cry (Just a Little) - Bingo Players

April 29, 2011  •   Categories: Blogging, Music  •   291 Comments

The new Bingo Players single “Cry (Just a Little) is a summer sliver of disco pop. It's super catchy and the vocal sticks in your head. You may recognize the sample from Brenda Russell’s 80′s tune “Piano in the Dark”. This track brings back memories of when I was a youngster and my parents would blast this track on the family road trips and we would all try our best to hit the notes just like Ms. Russell. Enjoy the Bingo Players track below and check out more of their work at http://www.bingoplayersmusic.comBingo Players “Cry (Just a Little)

Met Tyson out in London recently at a dinner with his label managers, he's signed to Backyard records with the likes of The Rapture and Chromeo. Very cool cat, and sounds almost like Billy Ocean and Rick James. The hook is infectious, and is a staple in my sets now. Check the video below and make sure to buy it !

Joe Srummer: The Future is Unwritten

April 21, 2011  •   Categories:   •   195 Comments

I caught this on a plane oddly coming back from the uk recently after not seeing it for quite a while. A great documentary about Joe Strummer almost told in his own words. Chronicling the rise of The Clash as well as Strummers personal pursuits in music and life from his bands after the clash, his foray into dub - dance - reggae, his acclaimed show on BBC radio that had a womping 40 million listeners; it's a rebellious, inspiring, and honest look into a man that decided to live his life the way he wanted to, sometimes being selfish but ultimately selfless. Nonetheless, everyone should see it. Here is a clip from the end.
